Having your first baby is an exciting time for parents, especially when it comes to planning their little one’s nursery. Many first-time parents spend countless hours picking the theme, color scheme, and finding the perfect crib, but most aren’t aware that the right lighting can make a significant impact on the finished room. Here are some lighting tips to help you create the perfect nursery for your new baby.
Keep It Cozy
Soft lighting is a must for any nursery. Not only will it create a warm, inviting atmosphere, but it also avoids harsh contrasts that can over-stimulate your child’s under-developed eyes. When choosing lighting fixtures for the nursery, halogens and exposed bulbs are a big no-no. Opt instead for shaded or diffused fixtures.
Dim the Lights
Dimmers are the perfect way to customize light in any room, and they are particularly useful for nursery lighting. The dimmer can be used to help your baby wind down when it’s time for bed. It is also ideal if you have to do anything with your baby in the middle of the night. When you’re changing a diaper or checking in on them in the wee hours of the night, the dimmer gives you enough light to see, but not so much light that your baby wakes up.
Create Layers
We have discussed layering light sources time and time again on this blog but isn’t always practical to clutter tiny rooms with too many fixtures. When faced with a small room like a nursery, it is tempting to choose one single bright ceiling fixture. We recommend selecting at least three light sources so that you can have a soft glow while still being able to see what you’re doing in the daytime. It will also create balanced, even light that makes your décor look beautiful.
